How Great They Art

NC State's 10th annual Art to Wear fashion show once again brought together some of the most creative minds on campus to show the latest in art and design. In an inspired show, student designers displayed a range of fashion - from haute couture to mass-market ready apparel.

Where Art They Now

In 2004 and 2005, Ashley Newsome was just another student rushing to put last-minute touches on her showcased collections for NC State's annual Art to Wear fashion show. Today, Newsome owns her own sustainable fashion supply and custom clothing design and production studio.

Serving Through Art and Design

When Shelley Smith graduates in May, she'll leave NC State with more than a degree. The Caldwell Fellow has gained valuable (and challenging) experience building an art program for at-risk youth during her time on campus.

Natural Born Leader

After traveling more than 5,000 miles across 10 Latin American countries over the summer, Saul Flores is more than prepared for a few side trips around the Triangle as he shares his experiences in hopes of bringing a measure of compassion and understanding to the ongoing national debate about immigration.

[Kitchen] Space: The Final Frontier

It's likely your grandchildren will thank Matthew Gilbride for all that extra countertop space in the year 2060. The industrial design grad student's award-winning concept may seem like something out of a Jetsons cartoon, but there's a lot of practical research behind it.

ShoeManity

For six NC State students, including sophomore environmental design in architecture major and Park Scholar Brian Gaudio, the opportunity to help collect and redistribute shoes to needy schoolchildren in the Dominican Republic has sparked a plan to build upon their experiences here at NC State as well as beyond the borders of our campus.

Passing the Test

Who better to design a learning space than students? That was the thinking of Underwriters Laboratories executives, who worked with a quartet of NC State design students to imagine the interiors of the company's new education and training facility in Research Triangle Park.

No Fear

Although no university had ever won the Urban Land Institute's national design competition on its first attempt, a team of grad students fielded by NC State had ideas of doing just that. And when the dust settled, the quintet's family-centered plan earned top honors, rising above 116 entries - including those from Ivy-League heavyweights Penn and Harvard.

Safety Sweep

When industrial design graduate student Kathryn Asad won first place in a student traffic safety contest at the New York International Auto Show, judges asked her not to mention the name of her school. It turns out they were embarrassed that students from one university - NC State - swept nearly every award in the competition.

Anything But Typical

A dozen NC State student designers, along with more than 2,500 spectators, celebrated the fusion of fashion and art at Wednesday's Art to Wear fashion show at Reynolds Coliseum. From the use of traditional medium and fabrics to local eateries' fast-food containers, student designs and materials ran the gamut.
