No building evokes the feel of NC State like the Memorial Belltower.
Since its completion in 1937, the 115-foot monument to alumni killed in World War I has been the university’s most recognizable symbol and likely the least-explored building on campus. Students, alumni and supporters know it well, but few have been inside the granite belfry.
Lately, though, the club of Belltower insiders has grown, thanks to Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Tom Stafford.
A desire to honor those lost in combat inspired the construction of NC State’s Memorial Belltower in the 1920s.
In that same spirit, the NC State community gathered at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 11, at the Belltower to honor first responders and soldiers, especially those lost in the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks and the wars they sparked.
How people learn of good or bad news tends to be etched forever in the minds of each individual, and every generation has a touchstone tragic event that transcends most other memories. The assassination of President John Kennedy. The space shuttle Challenger explosion. The terrorist attacks of 9/11. Each of these events links the masses in answering the commonly asked question: "Where were you?"
NC State students honored two of their own during halftime of Saturday's 38-3 win over Wake Forest, naming juniors Chandler Thompson and Sam Dennis as this year's Leader of the Pack award recipients, in recognition of their outstanding leadership, scholarship and community service contributions to the university.
For Alumni Association executive director Benny Suggs ('69), it's all about doing the right thing - and having fun along the way. Suggs, who served 30 years in the U.S. Navy and was deputy commander in chief, U.S. Special Operations Command, upon his retirement in 2000, was most recently general manager of the Harley Owners Group and Rider Services at Harley-Davidson Motor Co.

If you watch Grey’s Anatomy or Ghost Whisperer, chances are you’ve heard the music of Kyler England (’98). Since her days as a Caldwell Fellow, England has flourished in the alternative rock music scene in Los Angeles and was named one of Music Connection’s Hot 100 Unsigned Artist of 2007. Her songs from her latest album, Simple Machine—her fifth studio release—have popped up on numerous TV shows and earned her a spot as a finalist for Indie Acoustic Project’s 2008 Best Female Songwriter. She’s also a member of The Rescues, a band that the California-based Easy Reader independent newspaper described as the “first Indie supergroup.”
