With destructive tornadoes blistering locales like Joplin, Mo., Tuscaloosa, Ala. as well as sites traditionally inhospitable to tornadoes – like Raleigh, Minneapolis, Minn. and Springfield, Mass. – figuring out more about how and why tornadoes form becomes more relevant – and critical to saving lives.
As the leader of the only university with a presence in all 100 North Carolina counties, NC State chancellor Dr. Randy Woodson - along with his wife, Susan - hit the road this summer to gain a firsthand look at how NC State makes a difference from the mountains to the sea.
NC State makes a greater contribution to the Triangle's economy than any other local college or university, say respondents to online polling conducted by the Triangle Business Journal. Garnering 50% of the 1,424 votes, NC State easily distanced itself from second- and third-place finishers UNC-Chapel Hill (28%) and Duke University (15%).
In 2009, our faculty and staff strove to advance research, education and service in a time of limited resources. But despite the challenges, it was most certainly a productive year on campus, where our community of more than 31,000 students and nearly 8,000 faculty and staff continued to fulfill the promise of this institution through groundbreaking discoveries, lifesaving research and pioneering innovations.
