Program Components
Although the Caldwell Programs recognizes that each student's experience should be tailored to meet individual needs, the program offers a model to suggest ideal development.
The Caldwell Programs experience begins with the freshman retreat held after the selection of the Caldwell Fellows each spring. It is a time of community building, fun and self-discovery. Program alumni introduce new scholars to the program more fully and set the stage for maximum use of the undergraduate years.
Following the first academic year, scholars are encouraged to participate in a personal-growth experience (such as study abroad or the Fellows Wilderness Experience ) designed to challenge and expand self awareness.
As sophomores, students participate in a leadership and ethics seminar specifically designed for the Caldwell Programs. In this course, students are introduced to leadership and ethics concepts, with an emphasis on servant leadership. They also participate in a rewarding, challenging and significant service-learning project within the local community.
Students then go on to tackle a more comprehensive service-learning experience, such as the alternative spring-break service-learning trip or self-designed service-learning projects.
Students in their junior and senior years should participate in a professional internship, academic research or a relevant teaching experience. Scholars receive internship placement assistance from the Career Center or from alumni.
Students who have maximized program opportunities and achieved a high level of stewardship, as well as undergraduate experience, may undertake a final capstone experience with program support. Recognizing the importance of enrichment opportunities that offer experience in the areas of personal growth, service and career development, the program provides funding (up to $1,500) to defray the cost of participation. Students can challenge themselves as they make the transition from undergraduates to the next phase of their lives.
Throughout the undergraduate experience, the Caldwell Programs also offer ongoing programming components. These offerings include monthly dinner seminars with alumni and community speakers, upper-class and alumni mentoring, cultural activities and special educational opportunities such as the Center for Creative Leadership program.
