Farewell to Dr. Roberts

Dr. William M. Roberts, 90, died April 12, 2005, at Springmoor Retirement Community in Raleigh. Born in Sharon, Tennessee, on November 2, 1914, he was the son of the late William Vaughn Roberts and Vera Moore Roberts. Dr. Roberts was a graduate of the University of Tennessee and the University of Minnesota, where he earned an M.S. and a Ph.D. Following that, he moved to Knoxville, Tennessee, where he was on the faculty in the Dairy Department at the University of Tennessee. In 1943, Dr. Roberts moved to Raleigh, NC, where he was on the faculty at N.C. State University from 1943-1980. During that time, he served in the Dairy Manufacturing Section in administration, research, teaching, and extension. He was instrumental in helping to create the Food Science Department in 1961, and he became the first head of the department where he served until his retirement in 1980.

Over the years, Dr. Roberts worked through NC State University to assist the dairy industry in North Carolina. Professionally, he received numerous awards and honors and was the author of many publications. He served as President of the American Dairy Science Association. He was elected a Fellow of both the American Association for Advancement of Science and the Institute of Food Technologies. In 1969, he was a member of the panel at the White House Conference on Food, Nutrition and Health. He spent the summer of 1979 working in Vienna, Austria, for the United Nations Industrial Organization.In 1982, Dr. Roberts was featured in PEOPLE magazine. He was considered to be a pioneer in aseptic processing and packaging technology and was instrumental in bringing ultra high temperature technology used in beverage packaging to the United States. From 1980-84, Dr. Roberts served as a Vice President of Dairyman, Inc., in Louisville, Kentucky, after which he again retired and returned to Raleigh.

Zeynep Tanyel graduated in December with a B.S. and has been employed by Quest International Turkey, Trend Foods in Istanbul. She will be in charge of the Flavor Application Lab.

Pablo Coronel and his wife Ana welcomed their healthy new daughter Amanda into the world on February 13, 2005. She arrived at 7 lbs, 9 oz. Congratulations!

Dr. Chris Daubert and his wife Katie welcomed their healthy son Benjamin Hayden into the world on January 13, 2005. He weighed in at 7 lbs. Congratulations!

Karl Hedrick received an “Award for Excellence” from the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. This award recognizes Karl’s many contributions to the faculty, staff and students of our department. Congratulations Karl!

IFT Winners Dr. Dany Doucet, a recent Ph.D., graduate was selected for the Kenneth R. Keller Award for excellence in Doctoral Research.

We are very proud of the faculty members who were recognized and awarded by the Institute of Food Technologists.

Dr. Jon Allen is the 2005 winner of the Babcock-Hart Award given for research contributions in nutrition and public health.

Dr. MaryAnne Drake is the 2005 winner of the Samuel Cate Prescott Award given to a young scientist for outstanding research contributions (less than 35 years old or less than 10 years from receipt of their Ph.D.)

Dr. Brian Farkas is the 2005 winner of the William V. Cruess Award for excellence in teaching.

Dr. Donn Ward was elected as an IFT Fellow. Election as an IFT Fellow is a unique professional distinction conferred on individuals of outstanding and extraordinary qualifications and experience for their overall contributions in the field of food science and technology.

Congratulations to Dr. Todd Klaenhammer who has been selected to serve as a Sigma Xi Distinguished Lecturer. As a Distinguished Lecturer, Dr. Klaenhammer will have an opportunity to speak at various Sigma Xi chapters around the country.

Food Science Club Wine and Cheese Social

The annual Wine and Cheese Social, hosted by the Food Science Club, was a huge success. The event was held on April 2, 2005 in Glance Gallery located in downtown Raleigh. The theme of this year’s event was, “Los Colores de Vino” , which showcased a variety of different wine pairings. Wines from areas of Latin America, Portugal, Spain, and Mexico were paired with different types of cheeses and traditional Latin dishes, including beef, pork, chicken, and vegetarian entrees. The food was provided by members of the Wine and Cheese committee, and dishes such as beef empanadas, fiesta shrimp skewers, and chocolate mousse were enjoyed by everyone. There was a very impressive turn-out of 99 guests, including students, faculty, staff, and guests. Thank you to all faculty and staff who turned out to make this event another success. Alleson Dobson and Christina Stam co-chaired the Wine and Cheese committee.

The Annual Hotdog Lunch this year was held in the evening on April 21, 2005 in Pullen Park. About 70 people including students, faculty, staff, lots of children chowed down on hotdogs and hamburgers. Other activities were bingo and softball games.

Awards Banquet

The Annual Awards Banquet, sponsored by the Food Science Club, SDFRC and Phi Tau Sigma as held at the University Club on April 13. After a delightful reception and dinner the program began. Many awards, graduate and undergraduate scholarships and fellowships were announced. Among those were the Gaann Biotechnology Fellowship which was awarded to Erika Pfeiler; Alleson Dobson received the NIH Biotechnology Training Grant, Tri Duong was awarded the NSF-IGERT Fellowship in functional genomics, Mary Whetstine and Jacob Thompson each received the M.E. Franks Scholarship and Gary Matsey received the Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award. The Food Science Club awarded their Outstanding Undergraduate Award to Leila Valamejad, their Outstanding Graduate Award to Mary Whetstine the Outstanding Service Award to Dr. Lynn Turner and the Outstanding Instructor Award to Dr.K.P. Sandeep.

The John L. Etchells 11^th Memorial Lecture was April 13, 2005 at the NC State University Club. Dr. Etchells was a renowned professor at NCSU and an expert in microbiology, chemistry and processing of pickled vegetables.

In addition to a reception and tribute to Dr. Etchells, speaker Dr. Robert E. Brackett presented a lecture. The title of this lecture was “Germs, Genes and ALOPS: Changing Concepts in Microbial Food Safety. Dr. Brackett is the Director of the Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (CFSAN), US Food and Drug Administration

Tri Duong, Ph.D. graduate student will receive the IFTSA Achievement Award during the annual meeting in New Orleans. This award honors student members who have demonstrated outstanding service to their student chapter and are student leaders. Congratulations Tri!

Congrats to the NSCU College Bowl team - Southeast Area Champs!

The weekend of April 10 the team and spectators traveled to the University of Kentucky to compete in the Southeast Area College Bowl Tournament. The team beat Virginia Tech and University of Kentucky in an undefeated march to the championship! Becky Beyler, Catherine Conway, Jamie Isenhood, and Mary Whetstine competed this weekend and were supported by their teammates: Matthew Ballard, Andrea Krause, Katie Paske, Yifat Yaniv, and Coach Foegeding. A big thanks to the team's cheering section which included Alissa Caudle, Carol D’lima, Joanna Foegeding, Andriana Schirack, and Stelios Viazis. Next, the team will be competing at the national level at the Annual Meeting in New Orleans on Monday night! GREAT JOB team!  Everyone looks forward to cheering you on at nationals!

Oblinger Installed as NCSU’s 13^th Chancellor

Dr. James L. Oblinger, a food scientist, was installed as NC State’s 13^th chancellor on April 20, 2005 at Reynolds Coliseum. Approximately 1,200 dignitaries, faculty, staff and students participated in the ceremony. Among those who spoke of NC State’s promising future were NC Governor Mike Easley, UNC System President Molly Broad, Duke University President Richard Brodhead, Board of Governors member and alumnus William Burns Jr., and outgoing NC State Board of Trustees Chair Peaches G. Blank. Former Chief Justice of the North Carolina Supreme Court, Burley Mitchell administered the other of office.

Spring 2005 Graduation was on Saturday, May 14 at 1:30 pm in the RBC Center. Afterward, the department held a more personal graduation ceremony at the University Club. The recipients of Bachelor of Science in Food Science were Brittany Adeeyo, Catherine Conway, David Easter, Mary Ellington, Haley Good, Jacob Thompson, Leila Valanejad and Allison Watkins. The Nutritional Science Bachelor of Science graduates advised by Dr. Jon Allen were Brittany Adeeyo, Theresa Albert, Trent Bishop, Laura Cooper, Beatrice Criveanu, Jaclyn DeVita, Jonathan Fisher, Elizabeth Hinson, Jackie Illuminate, Jacqueline Markham, Nicole Manion, Sarah Manning, Carolyn Menzie, Sayuri Noehl, Kristina Price, Susannah Reason, Andrea Samper, Jesse Simpson, Emily Townsend and Mary Wilson.

The Nutritional Science Bachelor of Science graduates advised by Dr. Sarah Ash were Abigall Corry, Julie David, Gulshan Karamchandani, Chrita Laclaire, Jacqueline Larson, Maggie Mattis, Emily Mead and Ashley Swinson.

The Master of Science in Food Science degrees were conferred on Sahana Adhikari, Julie Omishakin and Beryl Krinsky.

Students who graduated with a Doctorate in Food Science were Eugene Ahlborn, Lynette Johnston, Lisa Barrangou, Jack Davis, Dany Doucet and Matthew McGuffey.
