Frank and Rachel Kirby Thomas Food Science and
Family and Consumer Sciences Scholarship
The Frank and Rachel Kirby Thomas Food Science and Family and Consumer Sciences Scholarship is a living tribute to the more than 80 years of combined public service the Thomases have given to NCSU. The undergraduate student scholarships and independent study stipends honor their dedication as extension specialists, counselors and friends and their devotion to helping students, citizens and industry with personal, professional and academic development.
Dr. Frank Bancroft Thomas founded the NCSU Seafood Laboratory in Morehead City in 1970, and served for more than 30 years on the NCSU Food Science faculty. Rachel Kirby Kinlaw Thomas worked for the NC Cooperative Extension Service from 1951 to 1989, and continued to serve on special food and nutrition projects through 1995.
Food, Bioprocessing and Nutrition Science or Family and Consumer Sciences students with an emphasis on aquatic foods are eligible for the scholarships, and the stipends to support academic and applied research concerning seafood.
Awards from the endowed program are based on academic merit and financial needs. Visit the NCSU Food, Bioprocessing and Nutrition Sciences Scholarships web page for information on this and other scholarship opportunities, or call the department undergraduate academic advisor at 919-513-0708.
