The 2003 Family of the Year award went to the family of Deandria Allen, a senior in the College of Agriculture & Life Sciences. One of 43 essayists who nominated their families for the award, Deandria honored her mother, Sherrye, brother, Harold, aunts, Shanya Andrews & Shammah Barrett, and other family members.

Deandria compares her family with the "Justice League of Superheroes" and cites instances of "super mom" defeating financial dangers and the "Dynamic Duo" (aunts Shawana and Shammah) warding off calculus and grammar evils. The support clearly has had a positive impact. Deandria boasts an notable list of academic and co-curricular achievements, including the Jabbawock Scholarship, Black Students Board Chair, and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority.

"NC State," Deandria writes, "…is not just a university, but our university" and explains that she is following in her aunts footsteps to NC State's "Halls of Education" and expects to bestow the same "student super-powers" to the young ones in the family.

Deandria's family were honored at a presentation during Parents & Families Weekend 2003 . Chancellor Marye Ann Fox presented the Allen's with a commemorative plaque and book scholarship for $300.00 at the NC State v. University of Virginia football game.
