As a tribute to all families of NC State students, the University recognizes one outstanding family during Parents & Families Weekend each year. Students can nominate their family through an essay contest coordinated by the Office of Parents & Families Services in the Department of Campus Activities.

2008 marked the 10th anniversary of the Family of the Year Award, which honors the supportive roles families play in students' education and in the life of the University.  Since 1999, hundreds of students have honored their families with a nomination.  Each fall as a part of Parents & Families Weekend, undergraduate students are invited to nominate their families for the award through an essay contest.  The winning essay is chosen for evidence of the family's support for student's education, enthusiasm for the University, and creativity.

In 2008, the family of Chris Goodell was selected as Family of the Year Award from over 27 other entries.  Chris, a sophomore in the College of Agriculture & Life Sciences, wrote his essay honoring his parents Pat and Patty, sister – Kylie, and brother – Brian.  Chris is a Park Scholar, a member of University Scholars and also serves as Mr. Wuf!

Chris wrote about the impact his entire family has had on his NC State experience. In particular he said this about his little brother, “despite being very supportive of my academics (as we often have little competitions to see who can get the best grades in school), my brother is most supportive of my role as a school mascot.  Brian is always asking about my “Wuffing” adventures.  I love being able to discuss this aspect of my college life with my brother, and it has helped us to remain very close while I’m away.  Knowing how supportive my brother is of my job as Mr. Wuf, it should come as no surprise to you that he is one of the biggest Pack fans you will ever meet.”
