As a tribute to all families of NC State students, the University recognizes one outstanding family during Parents & Families Weekend each year. Students can nominate their family through an essay contest coordinated by the Office of Parents & Families Services in the Department of Campus Activities.

This year's award goes to the family of Mary Pat Bulfin, a freshmen in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. Mary Pat’s essay -- which honors her mother Sue Bulfin, her father Bill Bulfin, and her brother David Bulfin (also a NC State Senior) -- was chosen from 42 entries.

Mary Pat describes her family’s undying support and enthusiasm for the University.  Mary Pat wrote in her essay, "what I admire most about my parents' support of and devotion to NC State is the reasoning for loving the school. They do not love it for hollow reasons, athletic affiliations, or because it was theirs; they love it because of their full confidence in the way State is preparing their children for successful careers, personal growth, and for life-long service in North Carolina and beyond. They love it because my brother  and I do, and such support, such trust, is a precious gift from the ones I love".

Mary Pat is currently majoring in Animal Science. She is a member of the University Honors Program and participated in Service NC State. She hopes to one day continue her love for service and helping others by working in animal-assisted therapy field.
