NC State recognizes that without families, great institutions are not possible. NC State needs families to send students prepared to meet the challenge of a higher education (not to mention help to pay the bills). Additionally, students continue to rely on the support of their families as they meet the challenges of preparing for life after college. The Family of the Year Award is a tradition at Parents & Families Weekend. The award is intended to celebrate the supportive roles families play in the lives of our students and the University community. Honoring an outstanding family reminds the NC State community that loving relationships and mutual support are essential institutional values.
Students were able to nominate their families through an essay contest coordinated by Parents & Families Services in the Department of Campus Activities. Essays were judged based on evidence of family's support for the student's education, evidence of family's enthusiasm for the University, and creativity. This year's award went to the family of Marie Majchrowicz, a senior in the College of Management. Marie wrote her essay honoring her father (Alex Majchrowicz), stepmother (Vicki Shaffer), brother (Nathan Majchrowicz), and her mother (Terri Majchrowicz), who is deceased. In addition to being a moving tribute to her family, creativity helped set Marie 's essay apart. Marie compares her family to the crew of a ship and describes how, with their help, she finds treasure, NC State. Marie is a University Scholar and has held leadership positions in the Inter-Residence Council. She will graduate this May with an impressive history of semester Dean's list for the last 6 semesters. She plans to apply for law school at Duke University. Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs Tom Stafford presented
the Majchrowiczs with a commemorative plaque and book scholarship
for $300.00 at the NC State v. GA Tech football game during Parents & Families
