"Alcohol & your Student: Time for a Check-up"
Question: Submitted Wednesday October 8
What's NC State's policy in regard to use and possessions of other
illegal substances? For example, street drugs (marijuana, etc.). |
|
Response:
Submitted Tuesday October 14
NC State University prohibits the manufacture, sale, possession, use or
distribution of any illegal drugs. This expectation is applied to both
on campus and off campus situations. Students suspected of being in
violation of this policy will be issued criminal citations as well as
campus referral forms. That means they will be accountable both on
campus and in the court of Wake County. This is not double jeopardy,
but instead reflects the reality that both the state and the University
have separate rules covering this set of behaviors. Students who are in
possession of any illegal drugs while in the residence halls will be
evicted from the halls, for at least a year. This "Zero-Tolerance"
stance in the halls has been in place for years, and is broadly
advertised and discussed with residents.
In terms of sanctions, the typical first offense of simple possession
of marijuana does not usually merit a suspension, although it does
include eviction if the student lives in the halls. Distribution of
marijuana (sharing) does require a suspension for at least a semester.
Possession of more serious drugs (schedule I or II), which includes
things like cocaine and ecstacy, require a suspension on a first
offense. Distribution of these more serious drugs requires expulsion
from the entire UNC system of schools. You can read the full Drug
Policy at this link:

Question: Submitted Friday October 10
How much different are the alcohol policies of off campus housing like
UT from the on campus Residence Halls? And how different is the
enforcement? |
Response:
Submitted Tuesday, October 14
Off campus facilities vary widely in their articulation and enforcement
of alcohol laws. UT articulates a clear expectation for students that
they comply with the state's alcohol laws. In addition, they have an
off-duty Raleigh Police Officer, who works in the facility at night.
This person assists in confronting violators. In addition, the UT
student staff are also expected to confront alcohol violations. Other
off-campus facilities will have a great deal less structure in their
pursuit of alcohol violations, typically relying on local police
agencies to address those issues. A shameless plug: there are no
facilities or complexes that do as good a job as University Housing on
the issue of alcohol...education and addressing problems. |

Question: Submitted Tuesday October 14
Are parents ever notified directly by the school, campus police, or
residence halls of any alcohol or drug violations? Obviously we would
all prefer that the students tell their parents themselves but I wonder
if it has to get to a DUI before a school representative will inform
parents of a possible problem. |
|
Response:
Submitted Thursday, October 16
NC State University has a Parental Notification practice that indicates
that for students who are less than 21 years old that we will notify
parents for any drug violation. We will also notify parents for alcohol
violations that have Disciplinary Probation as one part of the sanction. Disciplinary Probation is pre-suspension, and at that point we are very
much interested in getting the parents help to ensure that the student
changes their behavior. This probation is a standard sanction in all
second alcohol violations, and some more serious first time violations.
The notification comes from the Office of Student Conduct and is sent by
mail to the home address. If after receiving that notice parents have
additional questions, we would make sure an appropriate release was in place so that we could answer any specific case-related questions. |
