"Planning for Success After College:
What parents need to know about campus career services"

Question: Submitted Tuesday January 13
Can sophomores attend the career fairs?  Is it a good idea for them to attend early to get an idea of what they are and how to handle themselves?  Do the employers like having these younger students participate?

Response: Submitted Friday January 16
It's an excellent idea for sophomores to attend career fairs.  Here are some links that will give you and your student further information:

Tips for success at career fairs at http://www.ncsu.edu/career/pdfs/fairprep.pdf
Our job search guide is on our website at http://www.ncsu.edu/career/pdfs/CareerGuide2008for_web.pdf

Pages 52 and 53 offer more detail on how to "work a fair."

Not every employer is interested in speaking with underclassmen, but that should not stop students from visiting with lots of employers and then gauging interest in them.  On the other hand some employers have no internships available but are always on the lookout for future talent.  And, then there are the employers who will take a little time to visit with a sophomore and to offer advice.   These days, every contact a student makes should be well thought out and well done!  We also advise students to go to career fairs for majors other than their own, if a potential employer happens to be attending that particular fair.
