HAPPY NEW YEAR!
As the University welcomes 2012 and looks forward to all that the new year will bring, it is important to celebrate the accomplishments of 2011. In his annual report, Chancellor Woodson reflects on the year highlighting stories that "exemplify the culture of NC State," including those of "a blind man who joined the workforce as a sewing machine operator" thanks to his company's relationship with NC State's Industrial Extension Service, "a Caldwell Fellow who journeyed 5,000 miles on foot across Latin America to raise money and open minds, and a visiting teaching fellow who stepped outside her discipline to develop a process that uses bacteria to grow bricks." Off course, the University is also still celebrating the Wolfpack's victory at the 2011 Belk Bowl.
If these stories are any indication of what the University has to look forward to in 2012, I am very optimistic for our students and wish your student a successful spring semester. We hope that you will spend some time on campus with your student this spring and take advantage of the many events and programs families are invited to attend. Parents & Families Spring Fling 2012 invites families to enjoy a weekend of Wolfpack fun with NC State arts and athletics. Hoops for Hope promotes breast cancer awareness and will benefit the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund. Finally, there are many additional arts, athletics, and cultural programs over the course of the spring semester families are invited to attend. (See your spring PACKParents newsletter for more information.)
Of course, there are even more events and activities for students to enjoy this spring. Students often claim they don't know what's happening on campus and, as a result, find themselves bored on weekends and missing out on extraordinary opportunities. Help us keep students informed. Tell them about the special events planned to remember Martin Luther King, Jr. (see "Important Dates" below). Encourage them to read the Technician - the daily student newspaper, flyers on campus, banners, and countless websites to help them stay in the know about all that is available to them.
Best wishes for a happy 2012. Contact us if you have any questions or concerns. Call the Parents' HelpLine toll free at 877.568.5733 or email ncsuparents@ncsu.edu.
Sincerely,
Jennifer Bell, M.Ed.
Associate Director, Parents & Families Services

SHOULD OLD ACQUAINTANCES BE FORGOT...
...No way! As the clock struck midnight on January 1, and I was faced with the annual question "Auld Lang Syne" poses each new year, these three women came to mind and how their impact on the success of the Office of Parents & Families Services could never be forgotten. Although each of them are "leaving" the Office for a variety of reasons, they will always be a part of the Parents & Families Services family. Please join me in thanking these wonderful women for their support of students' families. You are invited to send a message via the respective link.
Thank you,
Jennifer Bell, Associate Director, Office of Parents & Families Services
Laci Weeden,
Assistant Director of Parents & Families Services (2009-2010)
Many parents may remember Ms. Weeden from her role as facilitator of Parents' Orientation over the last three years. During this time, Ms. Weeden made many contributions to the Office of Parents & Families Services, including enhancing the Parents' Orientation Ambassador student leadership program, coordinating the many details required to run Parents' Orientation, and introducing Siblings Weekend. Prior to her position in Parents & Families Services, Ms. Weeden served NC State in the Women's Center and in University Housing. Her warm and sensitive demeanor coupled with her keen knowledge of student life issues made her a great fit for serving parents. We wish Ms. Weeden all the best in her new position as director of parent programs at the University of California San Diego. Send Ms. Weeden a farewell message.
Deb Luckadoo, Director of Campus Activities
For the last ten years, Dr. Luckadoo has served as department head for Parents & Families Services
championing the program's growth and development. Thanks to her leadership, Parents & Families Services added an Assistant Director position and critical administrative assistance. Additionally, Dr. Luckadoo filled many critical roles, including coordinating Parents' Orientation and planning Parents & Families Weekend events, during office baby booms and staff vacancies. You could always count on Dr. Luckadoo for sage advice, mentoring, and deliberate meaningful support. The staff in Parents & Families Services are better leaders because of the role model in Dr. Luckadoo. Send Dr. Luckadoo a message.

Ms. Reiman's values of leadership, public service, social justice and serving the underserved has shaped countless student body presidents, graduate students, and professional staff. Her leadership and vision will contine to have a lasting impact on NC State and the lives she touched while here. Send Ms. Reiman a farewell message.

FLU VACCINE CLINICS
Cases of flu are currently being reported in a number of states, including North Carolina, and the typical flu season often begins in the fall and continues through March. A student sickened with flu typically misses 3-5 days of class while recovering.
If your student received flu vaccine this season, it appears to be a good match to protect against the flu strains that are currently circulating.
If your student did not receive flu vaccine, Student Health has a limited supply of vaccine. The flu shot is available by appointment at (919) 515.7107. Check with your insurance carrier to see if flu vaccine is covered by your policy. A single shot of flu vaccine protects against 1 strain of influenza B and 2 strains of influenza A. It takes 2 weeks for the vaccine to be protective.
Additional information is available at ncsu.edu/student_health or at cdc.gov
Effective January 9, 2012
Student Health Services is requiring students to bring their current insurance and prescription card to each visit; so that the staff can better assist them.
Get-Well Meal Kits If students develop symptoms due to influenza or other viruses, such as stomach virus, University Dining offers a Get-Well Meal Kit stocked with non-perishable foods and drink that can be eaten at their convenience in the comfort of their rooms. The kit includes items recommended by Student Health Services to aid students' recovery. Students simply complete a Meal Kit form and have a friend or roommate pick up the kit from the requested C-Store.
