ACCESSING STUDENT GRADES & OTHER RECORDS

In order to protect the privacy of students, educational records, such as grades, are considered confidential under a federal law called the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). FERPA provides students, including those under 18, with two essential rights which bring with them important responsibilities for the student:

1. Students have the right to privacy.

North Carolina State University cannot share or discuss records with anyone (including family members) without the students’ permission. This includes grades and tuition statements.

Responsibility: Students have the responsibility to share important information like grades, tuition statements, attendance, transcripts, etc. with 3rd parties (such as parents) who have a need or desire to know.

2. Students have the right to inspect records.

Students have the right to inspect records about themselves that are maintained by the University.

Responsibility: Students have the responsibility to pursue corrections and amendments if necessary.

Parents may obtain copies of their son’s or daughter's records in the following circumstances:

1. When the student consents.

a) Students may consent for parents/guardians to VIEW their financial
(billing, payment and tax records) and academic information (class schedule and final semester grades) on line via the University's MyPack Portal, www.ncsu.edu.

Students must initiate the process through MyPack Portal, listing any parents or guardians who may have access and specify what information may be viewed.  MyPack portal is available at www.ncsu.edu.  Once in the portal, students should select Student Self Service ->Campus Personal Information ->  Parent Guardian Access

Students are required to create a "pass code and hint" (for example, your birthday) for you so that if you call the University for this information we may verify identity.  Please make sure your student shares this "pass code" with you.

Those parents/guardians will receive an e-mail from enrollment@ncsu.edu with directions on how to confirm the access and setup a password.

b) A signed, dated consent from the student, stating that his or her grades or other specified records may be disclosed to the parents (name and mailing or e-mail address), also may be delivered to the Registrar or other custodian of the records.

The student is allowed to revoke the consent at any time.

2. When the student is financially dependent (i.e., receives more than 50% of his or her support) from the parent(s). A copy of the parent's most recent federal tax return (showing the student is claimed as a dependent) must be delivered to the Registrar, along with a request for copies of the student's grades or other specified records.

3. In health or safety emergencies, the University may release relevant student records to parents.

4. When there has been an alcohol or drug violation.

The University may notify parents of alcohol or drug violations by students under the age of 21.

See FERPA for more information about the law, regulations, and additional details.

Make Your Expectations Clear About Sharing Information:

We highly recommend that you have a conversation with your son or daughter, before he or she leaves home for school, about your expectations for sharing information like grades, attendance, tuition statements, etc.

  • Grades: Your students should be the best source of this information. Until final grades are posted at the end of the semester, only students, their professors, and their advisers are able to monitor academic progress in a class. We recommend that students keep track of their grades through returned assignments and regular discussions with their advisers and professors. Setting clear expectations now about reporting on academic progress will prevent end-of-the-semester surprises and create opportunities for you to express your support.

  • Tuition Statements: North Carolina State University sends students’ tuition bills via email. Ultimately, students have the responsibility for ensuring their financial obligations to the University are current. Work with your son or daughter to go through the proper steps to ensure that all those who need access to financial information are able to do so.
