Q.When do students get their room assignments?

A. Continuing students receive room assignments in April. New students will receive room assignments in Mid-July. When can students move into the residence halls? Regular check-in usually occurs 2 days before the start of classes. Approved groups who have received advanced permission may check-in earlier in some residence halls.

Q.Can my student move in early/late?

A. Early or late check-ins are not permitted in summer school residence halls. Permission for early or late check-in during the fall and spring semesters is granted based on hall assignment policies and the situational needs of the student. If permission is granted, there is a daily fee charged to the student. Students may contact the Residence Life Coordinator (RLC) in the assigned area of campus for more information after they receive their room assignments in Mid-July.

Q.Can my student change room assignments?

A. The initial room change period will begin approximately two (2) weeks after the start of the semester and last until Thanksgiving. An extenuating circumstance such as a health problem can be addressed at any time. Students who are changing rooms must check into their new room by contacting the RA. Students should be aware that room assignment changes are permitted only upon prior written authorization by the Housing office or their 24-hour service desk. If an unauthorized room change is made, the student will be required to return to the originally assigned room, will be denied the opportunity to participate in any other room change for the academic year, and will be assessed an unauthorized room change fee.

Q. What kind of furniture is provided in each room?

A. Each room is equipped with a bed, desk and closet for each student. For a more detailed description and layout, you may access the housing website at http://www2.ncsu.edu/ncsu/housing/

Q. What kind of computer hook-ups are in the residence halls?

A. We are continuously upgrading our network. For current information, contact ResNet at http://www2.ncsu.edu/ncsu/resnet/

Q.My student has a bad roommate situation. What can he/she do?

A. Learning to live and thrive in a new and unfamiliar environment and to understand human differences are part of the growing process of University life. Although open communication is encouraged among roommates as the best way to resolve conflicts, University Housing suggests students follow these steps to resolve roommate conflicts.

1. Speak to your roommate directly. State issues neutrally. Relate feelings. Offer resolutions. Be prepared to listen. Are you willing to compromise?
2. Ask the RA on your floor to intervene by meeting with both of you. His/her role is that of a neutral mediator as you both try to resolve the problem.
3. Together with your roommate, meet with the Residence Director or Residence Life Coordinator. The RD or RLC may serve as arbitrator in resolving the conflict. Roommates may be asked to sign additional behavior or room environment contracts. If agreements cannot be reached, room transfers may be arranged.
4. The Assistant Director of your campus housing area may intervene in a conflict if roommates have been unable to resolve a conflict at other levels.

Q. Is alcohol/smoking permitted in residence halls?

A. Some residence halls are designated smoke-free and/or alcohol-free where no smoking or alcohol is permitted. All others are smoke-free with the exception of certain designated smoking floors or areas within the residence hall. Consumption of alcohol by underage students is not permitted anywhere on campus. Eviction or other sanctions apply as designated in the Code of Student Conduct.
