Brewing Up Something Great
Peanut butter and jelly, cheese and crackers - both famous matches. But the best pairing of all may be college and coffee. And thanks to a little matchmaking on the part of the NCSU Libraries and the NC State Parents & Families Association, it's a union that will improve student safety and study-time convenience.

For the 1999-2000 academic year, the Parents & Families Project will be directed toward the establishment of Hill of Beans, a coffee bar to be located inside D.H. Hill Library.

"This is going to be a wonderful service for students," says Carolyn Argentati, associate director for public services at the NCSU Libraries. "There have been some concerns over the years about students who study late into the night and leave the libary to get a little caffeine to keep working. Hillsborough Street often can be a distraction - and even sometimes a risky place to be at 2:00 in the morning.

"Having a coffee bar right inside the library will help students maintain their train of thought and keep them from having to brave the weather or the darkness just to get a cup of joe."

Despite its expected success, Hill of Beans is not intended to be a provit-making venture; in fact, Argentati says, the coffee bar will probably just break even. "This is really an issue of seeing a need for a student service and providing that service," she says.

Construction of Hill of Beans is expcted to begin in early 2001. However, the first phase of the project - the installation of premium coffee-and-tea vending machines in a 24-hour lounge - is already providing java jolts.

A student caller probably has contacted you to offer more information about supporting the Parents & Families Project. If not, and you'd like to make a tax-deductible contribution to the project, you may call the NC State Annual Fund at 800-258-1057 or 919-515-2034.*
