How should I advise her?” “My son didn’t tell me, but I found out that he was invited to join Phi Kappa Phi. What is this? Why is it important to consider joining?” Each year, less than 10 percent of our junior and senior classes are invited to join these prestigious international societies that recognize superior academic accomplishment. Not all of these invitations are accepted! NC State is the only university in North Carolina with chapters of both of these major international honor societies. Phi Beta Kappa dates back to revolutionary times and recognizes academic excellence in the traditional arts and sciences. Phi Kappa Phi, the largest multidisciplinary honor society, was founded about 100 years ago and recognizes excellence in all fields of study. Our chapter is now some 78 years old. Our students, among the best in the state, work their way through some of the most demanding curricula in the nation. It is only fitting that we should recognize those who excel in their studies. Invitation to membership in honor societies is one way we do that. Membership is noted on the student’s transcript, and it should be included in each student’s résumé as well. Phi Kappa Phi and Phi Beta Kappa memberships are universally recognized as proof of academic achievement by prospective employers. Each society has a small induction fee (less than $50). Even that may be waived if a student informs the society of financial need. As we build toward becoming a world-class institution, it is important that we continue to improve the academic atmosphere of our campus. Showing our appreciation of our most successful scholars, and thereby encouraging others to follow their example, is an important step in that direction. I hope that when your daughter or son is invited to join one of our honor societies, you will encourage acceptance and perhaps assist with the fee as appropriate. In most cases, it is a once in a lifetime opportunity! Sincerely,
