A Note from the Doctor
Lately there has been much press on Miningococcal Meningitis.
Recent segments on ABC's 20/20 and NBC's DATELINE have highlighted the disease, which is an
inflammation of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord and has a number of causes,
including viral and bacterial. Since these programs have aired, NC State’s Student Health Services has received many calls from parents and students asking questions and requesting additional information. Whereas, records for the last 15 years from Student Health Services show no case of miningococcal meningitis during that time, Student Health Services has issued a memo, including information on cause, symptoms, treatment, and vaccinations.
The “Student and Family Information Sheet About Miningococcal Meningitis” is available on the
Parents & Families web site at www.ncsu.edu/for_parents. If you have a concern or would like
more information on this topic, please call Health Promotions at (919) 515-WELL.
