New Parental Notification Procedure for Alcohol and Drug Violations
Recent changes in federal and state law have influenced
NC State's procedures regarding parental notification in cases of student drug and alcohol
violations.
In North Carolina, some alcohol offenses that had been classified as infractions - such as simple
possession of alcohol by an underage person - are now defined as misdemeanors, making them more
serious violations. This change increases the possibility of hefty fines and criminal records
for our students.
At the same time, changes in federal law have removed barriers that prevented the university
from contacting parents when certain behavioral issues arose.
NC State is therefore is implementing a new procedure to notify parents if students violate
university alcohol or drug policies. In general, the Office of Student Conduct will notify
parents by letter when students under the age of 21 violate the NC State drug policy. In
addition, parents of underage students will be notified of second alcohol violations.
Students will have access to additional information through various campus channels. A full
copy of "Parents Notification of Alcohol and Drug Violations Under the Age of 21" is available
on the Parents & Families web site at
www.ncsu.edu/for_parents.
If you have questions, you are encouraged to contact the Office of Student Conduct at
919-515-2963.
Please take some time to discuss the recent changes in the law and the university's procedures
with your students and help us encourage them to make good choices.*
