Leveraging the Services
of the Tutorial Center

Did you know that your student can receive FREE academic support by trained NC State tutors? e Undergraduate Tutorial Center (UTC) provides assistance for NC State students as they progress through their chosen curriculums. Assistance is available for students enrolled for credit in many 100 and 200-level (and 300-level statistics) classes at the University, as well as all writing and speaking needs. All programs seek to actively engage students by guiding them to become independent learners. They are designed to provide challenges for students to become responsible for their own learning in order to enhance their academic experiences.

Several different types of programs are offered to best suit individual needs. It is important to seek help early in the semester to benefit the most from these programs!

  • Appointments & Drop-In Services - Students may request to meet twice a week or as needed with a tutor by appointment or use available drop-in services.
  • Supplemental Instruction (SI) - SI leaders facilitate a series of weekly help sessions for students in selected large lecture classes, such as Introduction to Chemistry and Organic Chemistry.
  • Writing and Speaking Tutorial Services (WSTS) provides one-on-one consultations to assist with brainstorming, topic development, thesis construction, organization, drafting, and more.

While students who are struggling academically are strongly encouraged to use the UTC’s services, the academic support is not remedial. Many successful students seek academic support to enhance their ability to perform well in highly challenging college classes. The average GPA of students who use tutorial assistance each semester is very close to 3.0.

Additionally, the UTC hires and trains academically successful students as peer tutors. Students are eligible for hire if they have an established GPA of 3.0 or better and at least a B+ in the course(s) they wish to tutor. All new tutors are required to take ECI 210, Introduction to College Tutoring, during the first semester of employment. Tutors receive continual supervision and training in order to effectively serve their fellow students.

Both the training opportunities and tutoring experiences offered through the UTC result in more profound intellectual and personal growth for thousands of student tutors and tutees each semester. Assessment results continually indicate that regular tutorial usage results in improved academic success.
