Greg's topic will be Promoting Peace Through Education.  We will also be collecting change for Pennies For Peace http://www.penniesforpeace.org/

PENNIES FOR PEACE

Not only will you get an opportunity to meet author Greg Mortenson, but you will also get an opportunity to inspire action and help make a difference! You can personally make an impact on world issues such as poverty and lack of education through something that most people consider valueless: A Penny. In Afghanistan and Pakistan, a penny buys a pencil and opens the door to literacy.

Greg Mortenson’s program, Pennies for Peace, collects pennies to help build community-based schools in Afghanistan and Pakistan. This is what our contributions will buy:

1 Penny = a pencil
15 Pennies = one notebook
$20 = one student’s supplies/year
$600 = one teacher’s salary/year
$5,000 = support for existing school/year
$50,000 = one school building and support for 5 years

We would like to encourage you to collect your pennies and bring them with you to the Convocation Festival on Monday, August 17th, 2009.  Start collecting your pennies now! Bring them in plastic Ziplock bags, bottles, jars, whatever you may choose; there will be penny deposits at Convocation.
