September Is Food Safety Month

N.C. Cooperative Extension, in cooperation with the N.C. Fresh Produce Safety Task Force, is leading an initiative to educate fruit and vegetable growers and consumers about measures that can minimize food safety risks.  The organization has received more than $250,000 in grant funding to support the statewide Extension and research effort.

Extension Agents Trained in Fresh Produce Safety

N.C. Cooperative Extension agents participated in two-day train-the-trainer workshops across the state where they learned about fresh produce safety and the implementation of Good Agricultural Practices (GAPs). The Fresh Produce Safety Curriculum was developed and presented by faculty from N.C. State and N.C. A&T State universities, along with members of the N.C. Fresh Produce Safety Task Force.The curriculum consists of nine training modules which agents will use to educate producers.

The N.C. Fresh Produce Safety Task Force spent two days on Capitol Hill talking with members of the North Carolina Congressional delegation about how pending produce safety legislation would affect North Carolina's fruit and vegetable producers.

The Produce Lady Airs on Almanac Gardener

Watch The Produce Lady on UNC-TV’S Almanac Gardener this spring. N.C. Cooperative Extension agent and local foods expert, Brenda Sutton, will appear on upcoming shows. The Produce Lady is made possible by a grant from the North Carolina Tobacco Trust Fund Commission.

Meet the New Extension Team at the NC Research Campus

Earlier this year, the Program for Value-Added & Alternative Agriculture relocated to the new NC Research Campus at Kannapolis. Faculty members working elsewhere within Cooperative Extension were added to the team, which will work closely with NC State University’s new Fruit and Vegetable Science Institute. Read more.

 

Fresh Produce Safety Train-the-Trainer Workshop Series

North Carolina Cooperative Extension and the North Carolina Fresh Produce Safety Task Force would like to invite NC Extension Agents to Fresh Produce Safety Training. The intended audience is Agriculture, Family Consumer Science, and any other agents having an audience dealing with fresh produce production, harvesting, storing, transporting, and marketing.
