Is FYC Right for you?
First Year College is looking for students who are:
- Considering different majors at NC State, AND
- Interested in exploring all of their options in order to make a wise decision.
While the average NC State student switches majors 3 times, FYC students only change majors 0.6 times thereby shortening the time to graduation. In fact, FYC students graduate as fast or faster than their peers who start directly in a major.
"FYC gave me time to ensure I was going to choose a major that I would not need to change later, which might delay graduating in four years."
"I felt like I knew more about the university’s policies than other students not in FYC"
"My advisor was extremely helpful and made sure his students understood university policies and procedures. He took time with us individually to explore and discuss our future plans. I would recommend FYC to any incoming students who were undecided as to what they wanted to major in."
- Comments from the May 2008 Graduating Senior Survey
First Year College is one of the highly selective colleges at NC State. This is based on the following criteria from undergraduate admissions:
Successful candidates typically meet or exceed the following criteria: top10-15% of their high school class in the most rigorous college prep courses, B+ to A- grade point average, and highly competitive standardized test scores (SAT or ACT).
Keep in mind that this is just a statement about the typical FYC student. The admissions review process is holistic, not focusing on just the above-mentioned criteria. Admissions are handled centrally by the Undergraduate Admissions office. Visit their website for an overview of the general admissions criteria. You can find a profile of our enrolled students on the FYC Fact Sheet.
