First Year College Commons Building Groundbreaking

On April 25, 2006 at 9:00 a.m. the official groundbreaking of the First Year College (FYC) Commons Building was held. The building is a very unique joint venture between First Year College and University Housing to meet the needs of the whole student and set them on the path to success at NC State. The First Year College in the Division of Undergraduate Academic Programs partners with University Housing in the Division of Student Affairs to admit and serve approximately 800 incoming freshmen each year. In support of this partnership, Provost Larry Nielsen has demonstrated a strong commitment to undergraduate education at NC State by funding this new facility for the First Year College.

The FYC Commons Building will be located on Cates Avenue, directly across the street from the space currently occupied by the program. It will house the staff from both First Year College and University Housing including administrative staff offices, 15 academic adviser offices, four classroom spaces, Housing’s Assistant Director’s office and 24-hour University Housing Services desk, a campus Computer Lab, the FYC Computer Lab and other Student Services offices. The FYC, University Housing staff and administration are excited by the level of commitment from the University and the opportunity to further enhance the learning experiences of undergraduate students at NC State.
