Major and Career Guidance in FYC

FYC provides many opportunities for our students to explore their own career interests, explore the options provided at N.C. State, and come to a decision that suits them as an individual. The advising staff is a primary resource in this endeavor, but structure is also provided through the USC 101-102 course sequence. Here’s a brief overview:

Fall Semester:
Majors Search assignment: Students are asked to choose a sample major and explore the course requirements, the entry requirements, the career projections, and other aspects.

Majors Fair: FYC students attend an open house where they can speak with representatives from each and every college on our campus, to learn about available majors and opportunities at N.C. State

Strong Interest Inventory: At some point in the fall, students will complete this inventory, and then will receive personalized results. These results will be shared with the students in a small group interpretive session either in the fall or in the spring. The Strong links students interests to occupational areas where they may be compatible.

Myers Briggs Type Indicator: As with the Strong, students will complete this inventory and receive results from their adviser. The Myers Briggs illuminates personality strengths that can be used to target favorable job settings, as well as good study strategies, leadership styles, interpersonal communication patterns, and much more.

Spring Semester:

Academic Networking Panels: Former FYC students who are now upperclass students in various majors will be divided into various panels, so that current FYC students can gather a more in-depth picture of what it is like to be in that department or major. Depending on the panel, some faculty or staff members may also be present.

Career Informational Interview: Each FYC student will be asked to identify a professional in a career they are interested in, and a structured interview will be conducted.

Throughout the Year:

Students always have access to their advisers, if they wish to make an individual appointment to discuss major or career options.

Students may also attend university-wide events, ranging from lectures by CEO’s in the business world, to sessions about how to write a resume, to meetings of the student Pre-Vet club, to learn more about their targeted major or career. These events are associated with the Forum Series required by the USC class.

The text students will purchase for the USC class (THE Workbook) also contains helpful information regarding majors, careers, and decision making.
