Due to the great programming available in the FYC Village and assessment data showing that Village students outperform non-Village students, FYC now requires all students who request university housing to live in the FYC Village (Tucker or Owen Hall) for their first year at NC State. There are some exceptions to this requirement-- students can request to be exempted from this requirement by filling out this form. To aid in the roommate finding process, FYC and University Housing have teamed up to create the Village Roomster--give it a try!

Rationale for the Village Housing Requirement:

The First Year College Village continues to thrive and grow at NC State.  For many years, First Year College students at NC State have lived in the Tucker and Owen residence halls before we were ever defined as a learning community or before we formally became the First Year College Village.  Thanks to the hard work of many FYC and University Housing staff members, the FYC Village houses the largest number of Village students on campus and offers a myriad of services and additional staff support, including Resident Mentors (RM’s).  RM’s work in concert with the Resident Advisors in the halls and serve as Teaching Assistants in select sections of our USC classes, a required two-semester, one credit hour course for all FYC students in their first year.  The Village also hosts special programs that include Friday night trips to the BTI Center for the Performing Arts for live performances (past trips have included The Music Man, Camelot, and Jesus Christ Superstar); dinner discussions that include a catered meal followed by a discussion about a current event such as politics, religion or affirmative action; and most recently monthly meals with our Faculty Fellows.

Students who live in the FYC Village also benefit from access to “linked” First Year Inquiry (FYI) courses.  This FYI course, taught by an experienced faculty member, meets a General Education Requirement and is linked to one of our USC 101A, which is taught by an FYC Adviser.  The “link” is by virtue of the students in these two courses live in the Village and take these two courses together.  Oftentimes these courses are offered back to back, which provides opportunity for continued classroom content and time for field trips.  It’s also quite common for the FYI faculty member to attend the USC class as his/her schedule permits and the FYC Adviser attends the FYI course with the students, which continues to support a seamless learning community.  Through our data-driven assessment we are finding that our students that take a “linked” course have statistically significant greater GPA’s than those students not in link.  We’ve also found that students in the Village are completing more academic hours.

As you can see, the nature of our Village is unique because it is grounded in the heart of First Year College, one of nine colleges at NC State.  As a result of our students’ continued assessed academic success and sense of community our students experience, beginning in the fall 2007, we will be requiring our students, who choose to live on campus, to live in the FYC Village.

In addition to our movement within the FYC Village, FYC relecently moved--but just across the street.  The FYC Commons was completed May 2007.

The building will house several other departments besides our own:  First Year College will occupy the second floor, but our classrooms will be located on the first floor. University Housing will occupy the first floor and will host the TOTA 24-hour service desk and computer lab.  Third floor will house the University Transition Program, Study Abroad and Center for Excellence in Curricular Engagement offices.

We continue to extend the opportunity for you to purchase a brick for our sidewalk through our FYC Commons Brick Campaign.  You may have already received a letter from us recently explaining the program with an order form.  We encourage you to consider placing an order--learn more and see an artist’s rendering of the FYC Commons.

We are very excited and proud of our program, our Village and our new home. We look forward to having you visit in the future.

Can FYC Village students select a non-FYC roommate as their preferred roommate?

At this time, we are not in a position to allow non-FYC students to live in the Village.  This decision is based on our anticipated enrollment for FYC as we simply do not have enough beds to accommodate non-FYC roommate requests at this time.  However, in anticipation that students will be seeking someone with whom they can live that is compatible and develop a new friendship, we have created the Village Roomster, which mimics websites like Match.com.  Through this online spreadsheet, students can enter their contact information and some key character traits and preferences and search for another FYC student that you may want to consider living with.  Check it out.  In the meantime, if you have a roommate request for a non-FYC student, please complete the Village Exception request form by May 1 indicating your non-FYC intended roommate’s name and student ID number. If space is available after the May 1 deadline, FYC will work with University Housing on your behalf on the possibility for the non-FYC student to be accommodated in the Village as a preferred roommate.  Any vacancies will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis.
