Explore, engage, and excel!

The staff of the FYC Village regularly bring you social, academic, wellness, and diversity-related programs to help you connect with campus and your future success. It's because of these programs, the FYC Village has thrice been named "Village of the Year" (2007, 2008, 2009) by the students on the university's Inter-Residence Council. Discussed below are some of the annual events you can look forward to as a member of the FYC Village.

Battle for the beach

Every Fall Tucker and Owen Residence Halls--the halls which comprise the FYC Village--do battle for the naming rights of the Village Beach. The competitions pit Tucker residents against Owen residents in events that test the mind and body. The winner gets claim to the Beach for that academic year. paws- Pack Academic workshop series

PAWS, a series developed and organized by the FYC Resident Mentors, provides students with programs that will enhance their knowledge and skills in pursuit of academic success. A student who desires to complete the PAWS certificate program must attend a program in four out of the five program areas offered:

  1. Personal Understanding; Living & Learning With Diverse Others
  2. Time Management/ Stress Management
  3. Study Skills/ Test Taking Skills
  4. Choosing a Major
  5. On Campus Resources

Upon completion of PAWS, each student will receive:

Night at the Theatre

Each Semester, a small group of Village Residents get the chance to experience a fancy, plated-meal with a few faculty and staff from around campus before taking in a live play or musical. Whether you're new to the theatre or grew up going to shows, this event promises to provide connections with peers and faculty and exposure to the theatrical arts.

Leadership Potential retreat (LPR)

In February each year twenty students from the First Year College Village leave for a weekend retreat where they learn the fundamentals of leadership, grow as leaders and as comrades, and leave ready to lead in various positions throughout NCSU's campus.

“Thank ya'll so much for giving me the opportunity to go on this trip! I loved the retreat; it helped to teach me so much about being a good leader and more... I learned to be a good leader you have to have trust in your team... We bonded through the good times, and there were even some times when people were really struggling that we helped them to get passed their fears. Also, good leaders have to be able to juggle their own values with the values of the group and sometimes it’s really hard for people to do this. I learned a lot and I'm so glad that I was able to take part in this great opportunity.”

Participants will take LDS 149, one of the core workshops for the Visionary Leadership Certificate through the CSLEPS office; the Leadership Practices Inventory; further discover and explore values and ethics; participate in Team Builders, including a low ropes course and other outdoor experiences; play lots of games and meet 19 new friends from Tucker and Owen.  There will be sessions on Friday evening, all day Saturday (with breaks built in to enjoy the camp) and a closing session and evaluation after breakfast on Sunday morning. Service Programs

Each year, the FYC Village offers numerous opportunities to engage in service. Here are just a few examples:

Dinner Discussions

Three times during the academic year, the Resident Mentors plan dinner discussions where faculty and leaders from the campus and greater community come into the Village to discuss hot topics with students. These discussions include a catered meal and take place in the Multi-purpose room of the FYC Commons.

Past topics:

"The speakers informed us about what to do when you go to the voting place, how to register to vote and where, why it's important to vote, and how to choose what candidates you think best suit what you want your government to do...I also learned that if you don't like any of the candidates, you can turn in a blank ballot, because it's your right as a citizen. I enjoyed this not only because of the delicious meal but because it helped me on some things that were once cloudy to me about voting."

"Pizza and a Prof" Series

This series of programs, which takes place in the spring, has faculty come in from around campus to talk to our students about their field of study, research interests, and how they came into their career. Students meet informally to talk with the faculty over pizza and learn about potential areas of study at NC State. These faculty are part of FYC's Faculty Fellows program.

"In this event I learned about the many careers I could embark on with a degree in Nutrition. I also learned that I could major in Nutrition and still get the prerequisites for medical school. Listening to this presentation made open my eyes to doing something in the medical field. This forum definitely helped me with figuring out my major."

Faculty Fellows

Faculty from around campus volunteer to serve as FYC faculty fellows. This involves meeting with a small group (8-10) students to share a meal in the dining halls and talk informally. These meals, organized by the Resident Mentors, occur several times in the fall semester and help students realize that faculty are approachable, real people. Learn more about the Faculty Fellows.

It also helped me feel more comfortable talking to professors, which will probably help me be able to connect with the professors in my classes a bit better."

FYC Village Year-End Banquet

This banquet celebrates the end of the academic year and that has gone on in the FYC Village. The Banquet includes an elegant catered meal. Students dine and are then entertained by a talent show which showcases the unique interests of Village students. Students are recognized through various awards at this annual event organized by the Resident Mentors.
