Where the Red Fern Grows

Activity # 1: (ART) Draw a birds-eye-view map of the riverbottom where
Billy hunted with his dogs. Include landmarks such as the Ghost Coon, the
deep canyon and the river. Include a key with symbols.
Activity # 2: (SPEAKING) In pairs, have students bring in a paper bag
containing five items that represent key aspects of the novel's plot. Have
pairs exchange bags and go to the front of the room to present the plot
of the novel based on the items in the bag they are holding.
Activity # 3: (WRITING) Write two poems that can serve as epitaphs for
Old Dan and Little Anne. Be sure to bring out the most distinct features
of each animal.
