Academic Year Research Experience




**AGEP is no longer taking applications for ARE**
NC State AGEP provides an academic research program that targets sophomores, juniors, and seniors from underrepresented groups at NC State who wish to earn a PhD in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. A student may be selected for the Academic Year Research Program (ARE) at any point during his or her undergraduate career. Each academic year researcher must be enrolled full-time during the academic year and will participate in all of the activities outlined below.
To be eligible, applicants must be:
- Sophomores, juniors or seniors enrolled full-time in a bachelor’s degree program,
- US citizens or nationals, or permanent residents of the United States,
- Committed to a faculty and/or research career, and
- Planning to pursue a Ph.D. in STEM or Social Science Field (Please do not apply if you are planning to go to
Medical School), - Have a 3.2 or higher GPA.
Features of the Academic Year Research Experience for Student Researchers:
The Academic Year Research Experience will run during the academic school year. Students will also be eligible to participate in the SRE experience after each academic year. During the academic year, student researchers will:
- Conduct research for a designated faculty mentor from 0 - 20 hours per week
- Participate in the Undergraduate Research Symposium and OPT-ED Alliance Day
- Attend professional development seminars
- Attend monthly meetings with other AGEP students on various subjects of interest
- Meet with the AGEP Director on a monthly basis
- Receive $9.00/hour, up to a maximum of $3000 per academic year, paid biweekly
- Small supply allowance available to lab of mentor who has an AGEP student working in his/her lab
