Arthur B. Moss Graduate School International Travel Grant
Funded through an endowment provided to NC State by Arthur B. Moss, the Graduate School International Travel Grant program is designed to supplement departmental efforts to enable their doctoral candidates to make presentations at international professional conferences. The program is designed not only to give students valuable experience in making research presentations, but also to maintain and enhance NC State’s reputation internationally as one of this nation’s top research universities.
Eligibility is limited to full-time doctoral students in any field of study who have achieved candidacy for their degree. (A doctoral student is admitted to candidacy by the Graduate School upon passing the preliminary examinations without conditions or after fulfilling any conditions specified by the advisory committee.)
International travel grants only support travel for the purpose of making a presentation at an international conference outside of the United States. Priority will be given to students who are first authors on the paper to be presented.
International students should consult with the Office of International Services (OIS) to ensure that travel outside the United States will not have an adverse impact on their visa status.
Travel must take place during the time period indicated in the call for nominations and must not have occurred prior to the deadline date for receipt of nominations.
Travel expenses to be reimbursed are limited to the following:
- Registration Fees
- Transportation (airfare, taxi, other ground transportation)
- Food (at the university per diem rate)
- Other expenses will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
Evaluation and Selection
Students may not apply directly for these fellowships. Instead, they must be nominated by their Directors of Graduate Programs. Only one nomination per graduate program will be accepted per calendar year.
The complete nomination consists of:
- A resume/CV for the student;
- A statement of purpose from the student;
- An abstract of the presentation;
- Information about the conference (this may be in the form of a web address included in either items 2 or 3);
- A detailed budget of anticipated travel expenses;
- A letter of recommendation from the student’s dissertation committee chair (the recommendation must indicate the importance of making a presentation at the conference to the candidate’s career objectives); and
- A letter supporting the nomination from the student’s Director of Graduate Programs.
The Graduate School will make selections based on academic accomplishments, as well as demonstrated importance of the conference to the student’s degree and career objectives.
Two grants up to a maximum of $500 each will be available each calendar. Awards may be less than $500, depending on amount of travel expenses and the demand for travel funds. Funds will be held in an account in the Graduate School and will be used to reimburse actual travel expenses in accordance with university travel policy.
The Graduate School accepts nominations from Directors of Graduate Programs on a rolling basis.
