Graduate Admissions Review After COVID-19 Disruptions

Following the global disruption caused by the 2020 Covid-19 pandemic, the Graduate School at NC State recognizes the shift that occurred in learning environments, particularly the undergraduate experience. We acknowledge that the typical preparations for applying to Graduate School were upset. Therefore NC State Admissions committees will take these disruptions into account when reviewing transcripts and other application materials, in order to assess an individualized and holistic review of applications.

We also understand that many academic institutions, including NC State, made changes to their grading policies during the disruption, and they allowed Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory, Pass/No Record, Credit/No Credit, Pass/Fail, and other similar grading options. We will respect the adoption of changes to the grading scheme made during the Covid-19 pandemic. Additionally, some graduate programs have changed their standardized testing requirements and many of them no longer require GRE scores. Check with your graduate program directly for specifics.

As always, we invite applicants to discuss their triumphs and their challenges in their personal statement, and especially now you are encouraged to relate to the difficulties and/or limitations that you may have experienced during the pandemic.

Transcript Admission Requirements

We encourage applicants to have their official transcripts and degree statements sent to us electronically, when possible. We recognize that some institutions have been impacted by COVID-19, removing the possibility to obtain hard copy official transcripts at this time. In order to consider an electronic transcript as official, it must be sent to graduate_applications@ncsu.edu by an official at your university.

English Proficiency Admission Requirements

The Graduate School accepts TOEFL iBT, TOEFL iBT Home Edition, IELTS, and Duolingo English Test examination results. You can find minimum score requirements for each exam at http://catalog.ncsu.edu/graduate/graduate-handbook/admissions/.

GRE and GMAT Score Admission Requirements

The Graduate School does not require the GRE or GMAT scores for official admission to the university; however, some of our graduate programs do have this requirement. See if your proposed program of study requires an entrance exam.

Issuance of I-20s and DS-2019s For Admitted Students

After the U.S. Consulates across the globe temporarily suspended F-1 and J-1 Student Visa interview scheduling, many have reopened. There may be a backlog for appointment scheduling, so we recommend that you complete your clearance process with us in order to obtain an I-20 or DS-2019 in order to have plenty of time to obtain a visa for arrival in the U.S.
