Introduction

The efficiency with which Directors of Graduate Programs (DGPs) administer their programs reflects upon the quality of graduate education at NC State. The Graduate School assists the DGP in this endeavor by managing NC State's graduate programs, as well as supporting the graduate students, DGPs, graduate faculty, the Administrative Board of the Graduate School, and other NC State service offices.

The Graduate School has enthusiastically expanded its initiatives and is maintaining this momentum toward more efficient service. Major changes in student recruitment, processing graduate student admissions and records, solicitation of funding sources, comprehensive teacher-training initiatives, and development of information systems have contributed to a rapidly changing administrative environment. Consequently, it is more important than ever for DGPs, their staff, and students to have instant access to current Graduate School policies and procedures. This online Handbook replaces all previous versions.

The Graduate Administrative Handbook provides an overview of Graduate School functions and resources, as well as the rules, regulations, and procedures administered by the Graduate School. It is the responsibility of ALL graduate students to know and understand their degree requirements. Students are responsible for the fulfillment of those requirements.

The Handbook is organized into the following major components:

Rules were recommended by the Administrative Board of the Graduate School and approved by the Dean of the Graduate School on date indicated at the end of the paragraphs, e.g. [Recommended by the Administrative Board of the Graduate School and approved by the Dean of the Graduate School on 1/1/02]. The date indicates the meeting at which the Board formally adopted the new rule.
