Guidelines for How to Find a Postdoc Position
Are you interested in finding a postdoctoral position? Dr. Peter Feibelman, author of “A Ph.D. Is Not Enough,” offers this advice:
- Decide in what area of science you want to make your name;
- Avoid a position where a complex technique is being perfected because one of the main goals of a postdoc is to finish least one significant project so that results can be produced;
- Find a mature scientist as your mentor rather than a relative novice.
There are also other considerations to take into account before searching and applying for a postdoctoral appointment. Following are resources to review before you start your search for a postdoc:
The National Academies Press outlines some steps for preparing for a postdoctoral position.
Ann Miller, a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in Dr. Bill Bement’s Lab and a member of the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB) Education and Professional Development Committee offers some excellent guidelines for how to become a postdoc and where to search for postdoctoral fellowships.
Carol Manahan, president of the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine Postdoctoral Association and postdoctoral fellow in Peter N. Devreotes’ laboratory, offers some important suggestions.
The University of Buffalo has outlined questions to consider asking a principal investigator (PI) during a postdoc interview or during the first few weeks of your postdoctoral experience.
