The Graduate School is pleased to announce the 2008-09 competition for the Walter H. Wilkinson Graduate Research Ethics Fellowship. Funded through an endowment established by NC State alumnus Walter H. Wilkinson, this fellowship will be awarded to a doctoral student at NC State University. Within the university’s larger Responsible Conduct of Research Program, the Walter H. Wilkinson Research Ethics Fellow is a doctoral student who engages in an in-depth study of responsible conduct of research for one academic year, exploring the guidelines for professional conduct and ethical decision-making that are part of the very fabric of a research university.
Eligibility Requirements
Each applicant applies in conjunction with a faculty mentor. Together, they develop original curricular materials in responsible conduct of research. Applicants must be doctoral students sufficiently advanced in their program to allow them time to work collaboratively and intensively with the faculty mentor, and in good academic standing in their departments. Students should have completed 18 credit hours in their major and had some research experience by the beginning of the fellowship term.
Program Requirements
The Fellow must register for 1 credit of PHI 816, “Introduction to Research Ethics,” in Fall 2008.
The Fellow must develop an original curricular module (e.g., a case study, annotated bibliography, or other pedagogical resource) on an ethics issue specific to his or her discipline.
Stipend and Award Duration
$3000 to be paid to the participating student in two equal installments: $1500 in December 2008 and $1500 in May 2009. Award is for one academic year only and is not renewable.
Nomination and Selection
Selection is made by the Responsible Conduct of Research Advisory Committee. Each Director of Graduate Programs may nominate one student. Nominations must include the following:
- A nomination form signed by the Director of Graduate Programs, the faculty mentor, and the applicant
- A letter from the proposed faculty mentor describing the learning experience plan
- A statement of purpose from the student
- Two letters of recommendation
