The Graduate School Honors Excellence!

On April 18, 2012, the Graduate School recognized the graduate students and postdoctoral scholars who have earned recognition for their participation in Preparing Future Leaders (PFL) programs.

PFL programs are designed to establish a foundation for lifelong professional development for graduate students and postdoctoral scholars. Since 2007, PFL has delivered 505 events to more than 10,000 participants. The PFL Celebration of Graduate Student Success honored participants who completed the Certificate of Accomplishment in Teaching program, the Mentoring and Teaching Practicum, the Preparing the Professoriate program, the Graduate Leadership Development Series, the Certificate in Career Development, and the PFL Season Pass. More than 100 colleagues, friends, family, faculty, and staff members attended the ice cream social and poster session to celebrate NC State's commitment to excellence in professional development.

Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor Warwick Arden congratulated the students and postdocs who participated in the programs offered through the Preparing Future Leaders initiative. Provost Arden explained, "The participants we honor today have taken their commitment to professional development to the next level. Not only have they attended PFL events, but they have dedicated their intellect and energy to additional teaching, reflection, writing, and presenting to fulfill the requirements of PFL programs."

Graduate students and postdocs support the mission and vision of NC State University through their dedication to teaching, research, mentoring, and leadership. The impact of these participants' leadership will go beyond NC State as they become future leaders. Arden explained , "The graduate students and postdocs we recognize today contribute to NC State's legacy and future of problem-solving that transforms lives and provides leadership for social, economic, and technological development across North Carolina and around the world."

Dr. Tarek Aziz, a PFL alum and now Teaching Assistant Professor in Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering, served as the keynote speaker for the ceremony. Aziz explained, "It would be an understatement to say PFL has an impact on my career." He encouraged the participants to stay on the path of excellence, always seek useful criticism, and continually challenge themselves. He concluded by recognizing the Graduate School for offering an extensive variety of quality programs and events to help NC State stand out.

Provost Arden joined Dr. Barbi Honeycutt, Dr. Melissa Bostrom, and Dr. Beth Overman as they awarded 131 certificates to students who successfully completed the PFL programs. The recipients of each award are listed below:
