The Graduate School honors excellence in teaching and professional development

On April 20, 2011, the Graduate School recognized the graduate students who have completed the Certificate of Accomplishment in Teaching (CoAT) program, the Mentoring and Teaching Practicum, and the Preparing the Professoriate (PTP) program. Nearly 100 colleagues, friends, family members, faculty, and staff attended the ice cream social to celebrate NC State's commitment to teaching excellence and professional development opportunities for graduate students.

Senior Vice Provost Emerita Dr. Katie Perry congratulated the students and explained that today's faculty are leaders now, but our graduate students are the leaders of the future. Dr. Perry reinforced NC State's commitment to excellence and innovation, which impacts teaching, leadership, and mentoring. Dr. Perry recognized all of the graduate students who have teaching responsibilities and praised them for finding balance in their lives to commit additional time beyond their own coursework and research to learn how to teach effectively.

Dr. Duane Larick, Dean of the Graduate School, highlighted the importance of offering training, support, and professional development opportunities for graduate students through the Preparing Future Leaders initiative. Larick noted, "PFL events and professional development programs are what we want the Graduate School to stand for." He hopes the Graduate School can become recognized for such extracurricular initiatives that help graduate students learn transferable skills to prepare them for successful careers, whether in academia, industry, and government. Dean Larick described the overall growth and success of the PFL initiative, which has delivered 362 professional development workshops and seminars to more than 9000 graduate students since it was established in 2007.

Dr. Perry and Dean Larick awarded 49 certificates to students who successfully completed the Certificate of Accomplishment in Teaching program. They honored four students who were selected as participants in the Mentoring and Teaching Practicum, and they honored 27 students who successfully completed the Preparing the Professoriate program. All of these programs are part of the Graduate School's Preparing Future Leaders initiative, designed to offer training, support, and professional development experiences for graduate students.
