UNDERGRADUATE / INTRO

At the heart of the program is the studio course — six credit hours taken each semester, including freshman year. Students and faculty meet every Monday, Wednesday and Friday afternoon for discussion, lecture, critique and process instruction around the objectives determined by the level of the studio. In the last three semesters — second semester junior and the final senior year — studios take the form of advanced graphic design topic courses in which specific design issues or areas of interest are isolated, and related skills refined.

In addition to studio, the two semesters of sophomore year and first semester junior year require six credit hours in courses that focus on typography and image making. Likewise, a number of advanced design electives are offered in the last three semesters that focus on specialized typography and imaging application, including motion graphics, interaction design, publication design, and exhibition design.
What goes on in these studios and focus classes is the subject of this site. The projects presented here are the result of many hours of hard work by students in the process of learning the craft and building knowledge. The projects represent progressive design challenges and countless hours of productive exchange between student peers and faculty that not only prepare students to be graphic designers, but to be thinking citizens aware of design's impact on society.

This site also offers links to faculty and student portfolio websites, blogs maintained by graphic design students, some current “live” syllabi, alumni websites and several useful online sources about graphic design. Stay tuned though. This site will be refreshed continually to reflect the life, the pulse, of graphic design in the College of Design at NC State.
