Kappa Delta sorority held a ceremonial ground breaking for their new house on October 18th. Kappa Delta House Corporation President Laura Helton kicked off the program by welcoming a crowd that included undergraduate members, alumnae, University faculty and staff, and members of the design and construction team. Beth Collawn, Kappa Delta alumnus, talked about the tremendous partnership between Kappa Delta and NC State that resulted in the successful colonization of the sorority on campus in 2010 and the resulting commitment to building a new house in the Village. Director of Greek Life John Mountz spoke briefly about the vision for Greek Village as the hub of fraternity and sorority life on campus, with Kappa Delta leading the way with the first project under construction.
The 16,500 square foot, three-story chapter house will be the first privately-funded chapter house built in Greek Village will house 40 students along with a full-time house director and feature a commercial kitchen for food service operations, a dedicated chapter room, formal and informal gathering spaces, and an enclosed outside patio. The house will have the look of a traditional sorority house with all the features and amenities of a 21st century house. The design and permitting process is almost complete and we expect construction to commence in mid-November with an expected completion date of late July 2012, just in time for the fall semester.
The project design/build team has extensive connections to the NC State Greek community. Carl Winstead, principal with Winstead Wilkinson Architects who is designing the house, is an alumnus of NC State and a member of Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity, currently serving on their chapter alumni board. W.T. Barker is the general contractor, led by Spence Harrell who is an alumnus of NC State's Sigma Nu Fraternity.
