Greeks Come Out at Night: NPHC’s Homecoming Yard Show
By Chelsea Hayes, NPHC President, and Natalie Rollan, Graduate Advisor
On the evening of October 31, before the campus community began Halloween activities and celebrations, the National Pan-Hellenic Council held their first annual Homecoming Yard Show.
The Yard Show was an exhibition-style presentation by the council where the different member fraternities and sororities performed strolls and steps with a “Halloween twist.” This new event was held in lieu of the Homecoming Stroll-Off of the past few years and was a great success.
Historically, strolling and stepping are a way for the organization members to express themselves through their bodily movements. While making percussive sounds by using their hands and feet, they tell a story, express their organization’s history and teach others about who they are and what they stand for as an organization.
The organizations that participated included Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. and Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc. The council was especially excited to see students from area chapters of Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc. participating as their Gamma Xi Chapter is in the process of reestablishing membership on NC State’s campus.
Students from all four Greek Life councils attended the event to support their peers in the NPHC and learn more about this diverse council.
Thank you to everyone who attended, the chapter members who participated, and the NPHC Executive Board members who worked diligently to put on a great show. A special thanks goes to NPHC’s Special Events Co-chairs, Ashley Gaie and Kiyana Harris, for their hard work and dedication to organizing this new and exciting event.
