The pace of work has picked up considerably since the July 4th holiday. The foundations from the old Pi Kappa Alpha and Sigma Nu houses have been completely removed. Perhaps the biggest change is that the original Fraternity Court street now ends just past Alpha Delta Pi as the roadway and parking lots near the former houses have been demolished and removed. The contractor has begun clearing trees in the southeast corner of the property along the property line as well as behind Alpha Delta Pi and Sigma Phi Epsilon. Stormwater detention ponds are being installed in preparation for the grading work that will take place in the next 30-days once tree removal has been completed.
Here are a series of pictures taken from our webcam atop the Alpha Delta Pi house looking south towards the future Phase 1 building lots.

Greek Village Phase 1 is well underway. The Sigma Nu and Pi Kappa Alpha houses have been demolished to the foundations. The demolitions went off in spectacular fashion with a crowd of interested students, alumni and staff watching the buildings come down.

Demolition started with the contractor knocking the metal fire escape stairwell off the side of the Sigma Nu house before pushing the excavator’s claw through the south side of the second floor of the building. Associate Director of Greek Life Shelly Brown Dobek even got in on the action by driving the excavator and taking down a small wall in the southwest corner of the building! The Pi Kappa Alpha provided some tough work for the contractor but one final hit from the excavator brought down a large section of the side and back walls of the building in a massive cloud of dust! More than 50 truckloads of debris were removed from the site with large quantities of scrap metal, copper and other materials being recycled. In total, the demolition of the buildings took less than six working days.

In addition to the demolition, the contractor has installed a construction fence in the parking lot and grassy area across the street from Alpha Delta Pi. This area will be both a construction staging area and will be the site of grading work. The greenway linking Varsity Drive and the lower parking lot in front of Pi Kappa Alpha is now closed for the duration of the project.
In the next two weeks, the contractor will finish demolition of the foundations, install silt and tree protection fences around the construction site, and begin clearing trees in anticipation of the massive earthworks that will take place in Phase 1.
The “Demolition Webcam” (now deactivated) will remain live until the Pi Kappa Alpha house is torn down and then the camera will be moved. Additional webcams will come on line in the next two weeks so you can watch Phase 1 progress from a variety of angles.
