Why Go Greek?

Being Greek means more than just wearing Greek letters, attending meetings, and going to parties.  Being in a fraternity or sorority is about making friendships that will last far beyond your college years. Membership in a Greek organization enhances your personal development through a commitment to the ideals of scholarship, leadership, and service. Fraternities and sororities look for students who share similar goals and values while respecting your individuality. Your brothers and sisters are there to support you and help make the many transitions during college easier and more memorable.

NC State hosts more than 50 chapters ranging in size from four to more than 120 members each.  Although all embrace the fraternal values of brotherhood/sisterhood, service, scholarship, and leadership, some are more social in focus, while others affiliate around shared identity or special interests.

The Pillars of Greek Life

Four pillars guide fraternities and sororities at North Carolina State University: Brotherhood & Sisterhood, Scholarship, Leadership, and Service. These fraternal values provide a strong foundation to support a student's personal development during the undergraduate years.

More than Letters - Our Standards

At NC State, we measure the performance of chapters each year to determine compliance with our Standards and compile that data to share the good work of our organizations. All data is self reported, and paints a pretty good picture of what to expect during your years of affiliation.

  • Alumni and Graduate Chapter Relations - on average, our chapters interact with their alumni and/or graduate chapters 3 to 4 times a year
  • Campus Leadership and Involvement - about 72% of our members belong to other student organizations on campus, many in leadership roles
  • Council Involvement - chapters tend to co-sponsor or attend programs with their council about 5 times a year and with other council chapters 6 times a year
  • Educational Programs - on average, chapters host about 7 programs for their chapter and/or the NC State community each year and attend another 5 programs sponsored by the University
  • Financial Management - chapters are encourage to develop budgets at the beginning of each year to monitor and track expenses and all chapters are in good financial standing with the university (all bills and rents paid by the end of the fiscal year)
  • Leadership Training - chapters prepare goals each year, attend training offered by the Department of Greek Life and their respective Inter/National Fraternity or Sorority
  • Membership - Greek Life enforces strict policies to ensure the process of recurting and training new members respects the dignity and rights of all potential members. Chapters are also encouraged to work hard and play hard. To that end, membership also includes brotherhood and sisterhood events, and encourages chapters to host events for families.
  • Risk Management - Greek Life provides training each year to support officers and encourage. When things go awry, chapters work with advisors, internal standards boards, and the Office of Student Conduct to hold members accountable and learn from their mistakes. Last year, only four chapters out of 50 met with Student Conduct to resolve behavioral issues.
  • Scholarship - 55% of our members are above the all student average and we are working to improve that number everyday by better training student leaders and placing faculty advisors with chapters. Currently 37 chapters have faculty advisors.
  • Service/Philanthropy - Last year, fraternity men and sorority women volunteered more than 64,000 hours in the university and surrounding community for an average of 33 hours per member. In addition, our chapters hosted 94 events to raise both awareness and dollars for charity. Donations exceeded $135,000.
