Research Programs
There are several opportunities for overseas students and researchers to engage in exciting and cutting-edge research at NC State University. The GTI is happy to facilitate short-term research opportunities for overseas student researchers who are invited by an NC State faculty member and who meet the necessary eligibility requirements. If you are sponsored by NC State University, a government agency, or an international organization – or if you are currently enrolled at an overseas university that has a current student and research exchange agreement – you may be eligible to conduct research on campus for up to 6 months under the supervision of an NC State faculty member.
Go to the GTR page for more information and application forms or contact the GTI staff.
Other Research Opportunities for Overseas Nationals at NC State
1. The GTI Certificate in US Culture and Cooperative Education. A one semester program that allows eligible students to engage in a hybrid course/research program. Students learn about US culture and education (GTI 401 Course), enroll in another 3 credit course in their major, and engage in a half-time research or internship program.
2. J-1 Exchange Visitor Research Scholar Program. For post-docs, faculty on research sabbaticals, and other professionals who already have a graduate degree and are invited to do supervised research at NC State University. Contact the NC State faculty member who has invited you to engage in supervised research – the host department will collect and arrange the necessary paperwork you will need.
3. The Visiting Graduate Research Student Program. Eligible students in graduate programs overseas may be admitted to an intermediate length research program (1 to 4 semesters). Contact the Graduate School for more information.
4. Some researchers and tenure-track faculty are sponsored for employment visas (H-1B, TN, O-1, or Permanent Residency). If you are offered a long term research position at NC State, you should contact the International Employment Office in Human Resources for assistance.
