Substance Use at NC State

At NC State University, like most other higher educational institutions in the United States, a majority of students report drinking alcohol. However, most students don’t drink as much as they think they do. That’s great news! However, alcohol and other drug use is still a major issue.

In the spring of 2009 the university participated in the American College Health Association National College Health Assessment. 744 NC State students participated. Following are some of the results:
  • 67% of students surveyed consumed alcohol in the last month.
  • 20% reported that they have never consumed alcohol.
  • 40% of males had consumed 5 or more drinks at least once in the last 14 days.
  • 24% of females had consumed 5 or more drinks at least once in the last 14 days.
  • 13% used marijuana at least once in the last 30 days.
  • 15% used tobacco at least once in the last 30 days.
  • 94% have never used cocaine or amphetamines.
  • 95% have never used designer drugs (ecstasy, MDMA, XTC, E, X, Adam).
Risk of alcohol and other drug related problems among students who had a drink or some other type of drug in the past year:
  • 31% did something they later regretted.
  • 31% experienced a blackout.
  • 16% experienced a physical injury.
  • 2% physically injured another person.

With regard to students’ perceptions of other students’ use:

  • 79% believe the average NC State student consumes alcohol 6 or more days per month. However, less than 30% reported such use.
  • 70% report 0-5 days of alcohol use in the past 30 days.
  • 87% believe the average State student uses cigarettes on a monthly basis; only 15% reported such use.
  • 80% believe the average State student uses marijuana on a monthly basis; only 13% reported such use.
