So, you’re required to do some education on the hallway.
A tried and true educational theme to talk about is alcohol. But
who wants to show up for such a topic? "I've heard it all before!"
you may hear them say. And some don't want to hear it anyhow. They
want to drink.
Resident
advisors need to know about college drinking. Look at the following
NC State CORE First Year (2) student statistics:
- About 47% of first year student have consumed 5 or more drinks
at a sitting within the past two weeks.
- Over 80% lived in a resident hall.
- About 48% have used alcohol in a residence hall.
Their drinking behavior can create you a lot of headaches. Isn't
it so much fun to have a loud drunk on your hallway creating havoc
on those around them? Puke in the halls, punched out windows, screaming,
singing loud - these are problems you don't need. That's why it's
important to offer alcohol education.
Now, what can you do to get across some alcohol education to the
students under your care? Here are some helpful guidelines.
- Make it interesting. Let them know they’ll learn something
they’ve not known before.
- Don’t preach. Present alcohol issues from a health and
policy approach.
- Provide a fun activity along with it (mock tails, for example).
