Objective
To find out how students feel about alcohol use in general and on
campus.
Materials
Pencil, paper, marker, tape.
Preparing for Session
Compile a series of alcohol related statements. Here are some examples,
but feel free to make up your own.
- People that drink everyday are probably alcoholic. (Please note
this: In reality, most people who drink everyday are not alcoholic.)
·
- I think that people underage 21 should not be allowed to drink.
- I think that the drinking age should be lowered to age 16.
- Most students drink too much.
- Most students have between 1-4 drinks when they party.
- Most students have at least 4 drinks when they party.
- I know how much my friends drink when we go out.
- I know a drunk when I see one.
- Some people get away with drinking on campus.
- If people aren't allowed to drink on campus they will find some
other place to drink.
- We need tough drinking and driving laws.
- Alcohol is (or is not) a problem on campus.
- If you are underage, it is hard (or easy) to purchase alcohol.
- If I thought a friend had a drinking problem I would know how
to help him or her.
- Students should be allowed to drink while at camp-out for tickets.
- Alcohol is good (or bad) for your health. (Please note that
much research indicate that a small amount of alcohol is good
for you. However, too much of a good thing can be bad).
After compiling your list write out each word(s) "disagree,"
"disagree," “don’t know/not sure” on
a separate sheet of paper. Place each sheet on a different wall
in a room.
Session
- Tell the students you will read out a statement and they will
move and stand by the sign that most reflects their thoughts and
feelings. Tell them there is no right or wrong answer.
- Read statements. Once students move have them share why they
moved where they did. This typically generates much discussion
and various points of view. Talking about attitudes will allow
for discussion on many topics.
Remind the group that regardless as to how they feel, there are
certain policies and laws that need to be followed, as there are
consequences for not abiding by them.
