RA Programs: Alcohol Poisoning

PDF Version

Objective
To teach students that alcohol poisoning is a medical condition with signs and symptoms that if left ignored can be fatal.

Materials
Copies of Alcohol Poisoning handout or alcohol poisoning cards can be obtained from Health Promotion. Contact Chris Austin at 513-3295.

Session

  • Tell students that alcohol poisoning is a dangerous situation. When people drink to the point that they pass out (you are unable to wake them because, medically speaking, they are in a coma) they are near death.
  • Go over the signs and symptoms of alcohol poisoning
  • Go over what they need to do.
  • Express that it is a medical emergency and needs to be treated as one because not everyone is simply going to sleep it off, some will die because they were allowed to sleep it off.
  • Tell students that Campus Police reports that it works under a verbal Good Samaritan policy, so that a person who reports a possible alcohol poisoning, even if they are underage and drinking, will not receive a Campus Appearance Ticket.
