| The
Men's Program (MP) is for men who want to get involved or become campus
leaders in the effort to end sexual assault and other forms of violence
against women.
The MP treats sexual assault and relationship violence as men's
issues. We all have mothers, sisters, wives, partners, girlfriends
or other women for whom we care deeply. Any violence or abuse they
suffer hurts us as well. Most important, this is a men's issue because abusive men are the perpetrators, and the silence of other
men implicitly condones abuse. The problem cannot therefore be solved
until men take action.
Men have a critical role to play as bystanders out in our campus community. You may be witness to a situation of abuse or of a potential abusive situation. These situations can range from abusive languate to actual physical or sexual abuse of women. Please consider saying something to those involved, or, if the situation looks explosive, contact the local police or campus police (when on campus).
Programming is available to teach methods of interruption for these situations.
Men who would like to become peer facilitators can earn
up to three credits for the training and program outreach
activities through PEH 335. Other programs are available for you student group.
The topics that can be discussed are:
- looking at masculinity in our culture.
- men's role in solving the problems of sexual assault and relationship
violence.
- understanding the meaning and importance of consent.
- strategies for interrupting abusive and unacceptable behavior.
- ways men can help support survivors of sexual assault and relationship
violence.
- the role of alcohol in all kinds of violence.
