| Being
sexually active carries with it the risk of becoming infected with
a sexually transmitted disease. STD’s can be spread any time
a person is infected. They are spread through intimate contact that
may include intercourse (oral ,vaginal or anal). When body fluids
are shared between partners the risk of infection increases dramatically.
However, there are some STDs that can be spread through skin-to-skin
contact.
Bacterial STDs are both treatable
and curable. Viral STDs may not be curable
but the symptoms can be treated. Hence, viral infections may be
with a person for life. Bacterial infections can reoccur if a person
is re-exposed.
To reduce your risk for infection, abstinence
is the only 100% guarantee. The use of condoms
and/or dental dams can significantly reduce your risk if used correctly
and consistently with each act of intercourse. It is also important
to talk with your partner about sexual wants, needs, feelings, and
expectations before the moment arrives. Your conversation with a
potential partner should also include condoms, STD/HIV
testing and other potential consequences. If you cannot have
a conversation with your partner about these issues you should not
have sex.
Student Health Services offers HIV and STD
testing and counseling.
