Insomnia
Insomnia is the inability to sleep or to sleep satisfactorily. Nearly 50% of Americans suffer from some type of sleep disorder. Insomnia is the most common.

Common Signs

  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Waking up frequently during the night with difficulty falling back to sleep
  • Waking up before the alarm sounds
  • Waking not feeling refreshed
Types of Insomnia
Transient lasts for one night or a few weeks
Intermittent occurs from time to time
Chronic occurs most nights and lasts a month or longer

If you are experiencing insomnia, contact a health care provider or counselor at the Student Health Center for treatment.

Common Causes

  • Depression
  • Gender
  • Stress
  • Environmental noise
  • Extreme temperatures
  • Change in surrounding
  • Medication side effects
  • Disruption in sleep-wake routine (i.e. travel)
  • Worry about not sleeping
