Working Together in the Community
Being part of the Wolfpack means providing leadership education and creating opportunities to address issues in social justice.
At NC State, our students’ love for serving others is rivaled only by their pursuit of higher education. This week alone, there are a number of events all pushing toward the same goal: one of enacting real change in the world around us – whether that be on campus, in Raleigh, across the country or on the other side of the globe. It's not a one-week effort – our humanitarian efforts continue throughout the year, and we encourage all members of the Wolfpack family to pitch in and help where they are able.
Below, you’ll find a pair of student-penned articles we hope give a glimpse into the passion for altruism that is present in the hearts of all members of the NC State student body. If you get inspired to lend a hand, visit the Center for Student Leadership, Ethics and Public Service for more information.
When Service Becomes Tradition
Homecoming is an annual event, and truly one of the greatest weeks of the year at NC State – one highlighted by several service-based elements that have become a long-standing tradition on our campus.
Aside from all of the football- and reunion-themed events taking place this week, we continue to uphold our mission of a public university and a land-grant institution with a strong focus on giving back to the world around us. This year, we are inspired by the work of Doc Hendley ('04). Hendley is an alumnus that has made a life of giving back through his non-profit Wine to Water, based out of Boone, NC. All interested members of the Wolfpack family have the chance to gather at 7 p.m. tomorrow night in the Talley Ballroom to hear from Hendley about the great things he’s been able to accomplish.
Today, we’ll gather in the Brickyard (at right) for what has always been one of the largest canned food drives on campus. Last year, NC State students, faculty and staff brought in more than 10,000 pounds of cans, and we hope to surpass that amount this year. And tonight, our students will spread out across Raleigh to take part in a new element of Homecoming, partnering with several local service organizations to assist them in reaching their goals.
A series of blood drives is well underway, too, with three Homecoming Week drives planned to ensure that everyone who wants to give can do so. Our first drive, held Monday, was a huge success. Today, we’ll hold another at the Campus Recreation Center, and a third will be held tomorrow. Those interested can sign up to give and help the Wolfpack family save as many lives as possible.
Also on Thursday, NC State students will put their baking skills to the test in the university's annual cookie contest. As a part of the contest, each organization will sell cookies to raise the most money for Wine to Water, helping Doc Hendley continue to bring clean, sustainable water to much-needed regions of the world. Hendley will also be in the Brickyard Thursday as CNN recognizes him for his efforts.
As our university’s mission statement states, NC State provides leadership for intellectual, cultural, social, economic, and technological development within the state, the nation, and the world. We work to keep this a mission of Homecoming Week as well, providing service-based leadership as we welcome our alumni home and rally behind our team on Saturday.
Go Wolfpack!
Editor's note: Service opportunities don’t end on Saturday – NC State students are committed to addressing social justice issues throughout the year. Continue to the next page to see how we are making a difference in the lives of those around us.
